Everything You Need to Know About the KITAS Process
Corporate Secretary Service Indonesia – To be able to work in Indonesia, Foreign Nationals (WNA) are required to have a KITAS Work Permit. Working Permit & KITAS are official documents that shows that you have a limited-stay permit in Indonesia and are entitled to work here. Obtaining and managing KITAS involves several stages and requirements that must be met.
The Importance of KITAS Work Permit
KITAS is an absolute requirement for Foreign Nationals (WNA) who want to work in Indonesia. Without KITAS, working activities in Indonesia are considered illegal and can result in legal sanctions such as deportation. KITAS protects WNA and provides legal certainty for companies that employ them.
What is a KITAS Work Permit
ITAS or KITAS is an official permit granted by the Indonesian government to foreign nationals to live and work in Indonesia. With this permit, they can legally invest, run a business, or look for work here. Ownership of ITAS/KITAS not only allows foreigners to invest, work, or run a business in Indonesia but also provides legal certainty and broader access to various public services. Thus, ITAS/KITAS is the key for foreigners to participate in Indonesia’s social and economic dynamics actively.
KITAS Duration
The period of granting a Limited Stay Permit Card (KITAS) to Foreign Citizens (WNA) is adaptive and adjusted to the type of activity and duration needed while in Indonesia. This flexibility allows for granting KITAS annually, monthly, or daily. However, KITAS holders must ensure the validity of their stay permit by extending it before the validity period expires and complying with all applicable immigration provisions.
KITAS Processing
The Working Permit & KITAS process involves several stages:
Have a Sponsor
Prospective foreign workers must be affiliated with a company in Indonesia that acts as a guarantor and will process their KITAS application. This company must have an operational permit by applicable regulations.
Completing the Required Documents
To complete the KITAS application requirements, applicants must submit several important documents. Among them are:
- A valid passport with a sufficient validity period during the Working Permit & KITAS period.
- A sponsorship letter from a company that guarantees employment in Indonesia.
- A completed application form.
- A standard-sized photo.
- A health certificate from a designated doctor
- A statement letter
- Other supporting documents relevant to the type of work must also be included

In the next stage, prospective foreign workers must submit an official application to obtain a KITAS Work Permit through an Indonesian diplomatic representative in their country of origin or residence. Supporting documents such as a valid passport, a sponsorship letter from a company in Indonesia, a health certificate, and permits from related agencies must be attached to the application.
Reporting to Local Immigration
After the KITAS application is accepted, foreign workers can enter Indonesia. The following process is to report to the Immigration Office to register biometrics and obtain a Limited Stay Permit Card (KITAS). This KITAS will be an official document showing their residence and work status in Indonesia. KITAS is the key for foreigners to participate in Indonesia’s social and economic dynamics actively.
KITAS Work Permit Requirements
KITAS has general requirements, namely:
- A company sponsor who has a valid business license in Indonesia.

- Physical and mental abilities that are appropriate for working in Indonesia.
- Relevant work experience or expertise is required to undertake the work in Indonesia.

- After these general requirements are met, the next step is to prepare documents related to the foreign worker’s identity.

In addition, some work sectors are excluded and cannot be worked on by KITAS holders, as regulated in the laws and regulations in force in Indonesia.
In addition, KITAS holders must work by the work stated in the employment contract. They are also required to comply with all regulations in force in Indonesia and respect local culture. It is important to remember that this permit is personal and non-transferable. To extend the period of stay and work, the permit holder must extend it before the validity period expires.
