Definition of FSSC 22000
FSSC 22000, or Food Safety System Certification 22000, is a food safety certification scheme based on the internationally recognized ISO 22000 standard. The scheme also includes technical standards, including the ISO TS 22002-1 standard for the food manufacturing category. Other standards, such as ISO 14001 and ISO 9001, are also consistently used as assessment factors in its certification.
Complementing ISO 22000 and the PRP (Pre-Requisite Program), the food safety certification scheme also contains requirements to help companies address risks in food defense, food fraud, allergen management, and environmental monitoring. Originally applicable only to food producers, the food safety certification scheme has now been extended to a more complete supply chain segment. The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) has also recognized the fuller version. Therefore, this certification scheme targets sectors such as food, feed, and packaging manufacturing, transportation and storage, catering, and retail/wholesale.
An ISO 22000-certified company only needs an additional compliance review with the technical specifications for the relevant prerequisite program (PRP). It will also need to fulfill additional FSSC requirements to match the requirements of its certification scheme. These requirements relate to food safety management systems, Hazard Analysis, and Critical Control Points (HACCP). An additional Quality Module based on ISO 9001 is also available.
In addition, companies producing food and non-food category packaging materials can also certify the HPC 420 module. The module certifies non-food packaging production sectors not listed in the FSSC 22000-Quality module. So, the production area can be certified as part of the Food Safety Management System.
Obtaining a 22000 Food Safety System Certificate can be done in collaboration with MUTU International, which provides FSSC Development Programs for companies to meet Level 1 and 2 food safety requirements.
