Under a retirement visa, you can make multiple trips in and out of the country throughout the year. With this Retirement Visa, foreigners can also obtain a local driver’s license and open a bank account. However, one thing a foreigner with a Retirement Visa cannot do is seek employment in the country. You are also not allowed to work remotely for companies based outside Indonesia.

Locally this type of visa is known as Visa Index 319 “Limited Stay Visa for Overseas Elderly Travelers”. This visa is issued by the Immigration Department and allows foreigners who are 55 years old and above to stay temporarily in Indonesia. The requirements and required documents are as follows:

  • Aged 55 years or older at the time of application.
  • Retired at the time of application.
  • Submit your resume along with the application.
  • Have a passport or travel document with more than 18 months remaining validity.
  • Copies of all passport pages.
  • A 3x4cm photo with a red background.
  • Copy of marriage certificate if married.
  • Bank or Pension Fund Foundation statement letter from Indonesia or your home country. Funds available from investment or pension income must be at least US$1,500 per month to support your living expenses. Total funds must amount to US$18,000 per year. Married couples must submit separate fund statements and apply for visas separately.
  • Proof of having living accommodation in Indonesia. The minimum cost to purchase a house or apartment is US$35,000. The minimum monthly rent is between US$300-500 depending on where you live in Indonesia.
  • Proof of insurance (health, life or third party insurance) from Indonesia or your home country.

  • Proof of payment of Immigration Fees.
  • Sponsorship letter from a designated travel agency.
  • A statement declaring your intention to employ an Indonesian driver or domestic helper during your stay in Indonesia.
  • A statement agreeing that you will abide by the rule of not engaging in employment or business activities while on a retirement visa.
  • A statement declaring your financial ability to pay rent. You will need to submit a signed residential lease for at least one year.

Once approved, the Retirement Visa will be valid for one year. This allows you to stay in Indonesia for the duration of the validity period, which is one year. You can extend your Retirement Visa annually (once per year) up to five times. You can extend your Retirement Visa without leaving Indonesia.

If you are eligible for a Retirement Visa but not with your spouse, then you can sponsor your spouse for a Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas or KITAS visa which allows foreigners to stay semi-permanently. While staying in Indonesia with a Pension Visa or Retirement Visa, you must apply for a Multiple Exit Re-entry Permit (“MERP”) which can be used for permission to travel in and out of Indonesia. The MERP is valid for 6 months to one year.
