Want to Use a Virtual Office? Find Out What Type of Business is Right for You!
Corporate Secretary Service Indonesia – The trend of using virtual offices, especially for startups, has recently increased. The Association of Indonesian Joint Office Service Entrepreneurs (PERJAKBI) recorded in early 2020 that the number of virtual offices in Indonesia had reached 170 thousand units. One of the reasons for the high use of virtual offices is that business actors do not need to spend a lot of money to buy or rent office buildings.
In addition, business actors can also obtain various facilities, be registered as a business entity, and have a strategic office location. However, business actors need to know that not all types of businesses can use virtual offices. So, what kinds of companies are allowed? Let’s see the following explanation.
Virtual Office at a Glance
A virtual office or co-working space is an office that has a physical space and is equipped with office support services provided by the virtual office manager to be used as a place of residence, place of business activities, or correspondence jointly by two or more entrepreneurs for the use of the office in question there is payment in any form, excluding building rental services and office rental services (serviced office).
Until now, there have been no regulations that specifically regulate virtual offices in Indonesia, but there are supporting regulations such as SE BPTSP DKI Jakarta No. 06/SE/2016 concerning the Issuance of Domicile Certificates and Further Permits for Virtual Office Users and Permenkeu No. 147/PMK.03 of 2017 concerning Procedures for Taxpayer Registration and Deletion of Taxpayer Identification Numbers and Confirmation of Revocation of Confirmation of Taxable Entrepreneurs. As previously mentioned, not all types of businesses are suitable and allowed to use virtual offices. Types of companies that can use virtual offices include:
1. Startup
A startup is a pioneering company that implements technology to support its business. Usually, startups only have a few employees and use the internet extensively so that work can be done anywhere, making a virtual office very suitable for this company. However, not all startups can be run using a virtual office.

Suppose the startup carries out commercial website or application management activities. In that case, the company can no longer use a virtual office as a business domicile, considering that this type of business can be categorized as an industrial activity, so the business domicile must also be in an industrial zone. However, suppose a startup is established in an area that does not have a zoning system. In that case, a startup with this type of business can use a virtual office.
2. Law Firm
In Indonesia, the rules regarding advocate permits to practice law are regulated in Law No. 18 of 2003 concerning Advocates and the advocate code of ethics. In these regulations, no provisions govern the criteria for a law firm for advocates. So that someone who has met the requirements in the Advocate Law can practice as an advocate. An advocate’s license is an individual license that does not require other licenses. This allows advocates to run their law office in a virtual office. A virtual office is a right choice, especially for someone just starting to practice as a lawyer because lawyers can get a professional law office with complete and cheap facilities.
3. Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)
MSMEs are businesses usually run on an individual, household, or small business scale. Because they are still small-scale, MSME businesses typically have limited capital, and no rules prohibit MSMEs from using virtual offices. MSMEs can use a virtual office as a business domicile to cut costs and increase the trust of clients or corporate partners who want to invest.
4. Consulting Services
Unlike lawyers, consultants have a personal practice license attached, and the application for a permit is submitted depending on the consulting services provided. For example, suppose someone wants to become a tax consultant. In that case, that person must apply for a practice license to the Directorate General of Taxes. Consultants are jobs in the service sector, so no commitments must be fulfilled. In this case, the company can be opened in the office zone, and a virtual office is the right choice, especially for beginner consultants. A virtual office is suitable for consultants who want to work remotely, especially now that almost all work can be done and managed via the virtual office is only needed when meeting clients.
