Foreigners Married to Indonesian Citizens Can Use E31A Visa

Corporate Secretary Service Indonesia – The Banggai Non-TPI Class II Immigration Office explained that foreign nationals who have mixed marriages with Indonesian citizens can use a Spouse Visa or Limited Stay Visa with the E31A index to join their husbands or wives in Indonesia. The E31A visa allows foreigners to join their Indonesian spouses and grants several rights, including conducting activities related to work, education, tourism, and visiting friends or family, as long as they have gone through the mechanism of multiple Stay Permit activities.

Head of the Banggai Non-TPI Class II Immigration Office, Octaveri, stated, “We fully support this policy because it makes it easier for foreigners who have married Indonesian citizens to live in Indonesia. This visa also allows them to engage in daily activities, both in terms of work and education.”

Hermansyah Siregar, Head of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in Central Sulawesi, also added, “This step is part of our efforts to strengthen relations between nations and facilitate blended families to live together in Indonesia more comfortably and safely.”

To obtain this visa, you can apply online through the evisa.immigration.go.id website. Foreigners must meet several requirements, including having a valid passport, proof of application from an Indonesian spouse, proof of having living expenses while in Indonesia, and a recent color photograph. In addition, a document of proof of reporting or recording a marriage that has been translated into Indonesian by a sworn translator is required if the marriage is conducted abroad.

However, it should be noted that there are several restrictions that must be considered by foreigners holding E31A Visas, including:

  1. Staying in Indonesian territory beyond the period of his/her residence permit;
  2. Selling goods or services;
  3. Receive compensation, wages, or the like from individuals or corporations in Indonesia, unless it has gone through a dual mechanism of residence permit activities to do work in an employment relationship.
