Director General of Immigration: Diaspora Visa Can Be Used for Work and School in Indonesia

Corporate Secretary Service Indonesia – The Indonesian Diaspora can work and go to school in the country by using a special visa called the “Diaspora Visa”. This was conveyed by the Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim at the ILUNI UI USA webinar entitled “Indonesian Visa Diaspora: All you need to know”, Monday (5/13/2024).
The Indonesian Diaspora are those who have had Indonesian citizen status, were born in Indonesia, or have Indonesian lineage. The Visa Diaspora visa was launched in 2023. Silmy said, this visa aims to utilize the potential of the Diaspora for the progress of the nation. “The principle is, we want quality travellers,” Silmy said.
Silmy said that the Diaspora has the spirit to return to provide benefits to Indonesia, as well as provide benefits to the country of origin. However, according to the former President Director of Krakatau Steel, the state must also be fair when selecting the Diaspora. Given that there are still many who need jobs in the country.
Silmy also explained that Visa diaspora can be used for education and work. This is because a diaspora visa is separate from the company taking care of a permit to employ workers. “So the employer must ask permission from the workforce in terms of obtaining a permit to employ. It”s called IMTA, or permission to employ foreign workers,” he explained.
Likewise, for diasporas who want to continue their studies in Indonesia, his party is trying to communicate so that the Ministry of Education can accept this. Diaspora Visa applications can be submitted through evisa.immigration.go.id. Diaspora visas can be applied for without a guarantor. This visa is valid for life, with certain conditions.

The applicant must also show documents proving that he or she or the foreigner was once an Indonesian citizen. Among others, through identity cards, birth certificates, family cards, passports of the Republic of Indonesia, diplomas or house certificates. Silmy added that the Diaspora Visa can be granted immediately for a stay of five or ten years, according to the application. With this visa, the Indonesian Diaspora will find it easier to stay long and contribute to Indonesia.
“We have networks abroad and have the potential, who want to help Indonesia as their country of origin. And also with the noble intention of participating in the progress of Indonesia,” said Silmy.
